Portugal 1961 - Fernando Peres

Fernando Peres is widely known as having been player of Sporting Lisbon during the 60s/70s for which he became Champion and Cupwinner twice each, during 6 seasons.
He spent his youth at the smaller Lisbon club Belenenses, where he later started his professional career in 1960. He was a very talented winger with great technique and good vision of the game. Furthermore he was quite effective in front of the goal.
These talents attracted the interest of Sporting and in 1965 he was signed by the green/whites. This step brought him to another level, not only domestic wise, bit also international. He played the 66WC for Portugal and in 1972 he was member of the team that reached the final at the Mini-Copa.
A fact that is not well known is that he signed contract with Vasco da Gama of Brazil in 1974. After problems between him and the board of Sporting in 1972 and being out of practice in 1973, he gave it a try and was lucky. He added another trophy to his collection: Brazilian Champion. Until today he's the only portuguese player who managed to clinch the Cup.
After only one year he returned to Portugal in 1975, signing contract with Porto. But spending most of the season injured, he resigned and went back to Brazil, playing for Sport Recife, just to become Champion of the Pernambuco Championship.
After ending his career in 1978 he became coach of several teams like Uniao Leiria, Vitoria Guimaraes and Estoril.
The shirt shown above was worn by him during the UEFA youth tournament (now known as U19 Championship) in 1961, that Portugal won for the first time then.
