Benfica 1986 - Silvino

Silvino de Almeida Louro was born on Mar. 5th, 1959 in Setúbal. He started playing football for the home club in 1973 as a teen and soon was called for the district and national teams of his age.
In 1977 he signed his first professional contract with Vitória Setúbal and became third choice during his starting season. After the first two GK left the club in 1978 he gained the confidence of his coach, who appointed him to first choice. This was the case during three seasons before he lost his place to Amaral during the 1981/82 season.
This led him to sign for Guimarães, where he had a perfect first season, helping the club to end on 4th spot. The following season was different with ups and downs, and when he got a invitation to represent Benfica, he didn`t think twice.
During his first season he didn`t play a match, so that he was loaned to CD Aves one year later. There he was first choice and had a notable year. Bento, Benfica`s GK for years, was heavily injured during the 1986 WC, and so Silvinos spell at Aves was over quickly. He imposed himself over his colleague Neno and became first choice for the next years. During that time Benfica played to European Champions Cup Finals in 1988 and 1990.
During the 1991/92 season he lost his top spot to his team-mate Neno and never won it back till he left the club in 1994, when he returned to Setúbal. But it wasn't a long dated return, as he moved to FC Porto one year later as backup for Vítor Baía. After Baía left the club in 1995, he grabbed his opportunity and helped the team winning the Championship.
In 1996 he left Porto, to represent Salgueiros and did it for three more years, before retiring as a player at the age of 41.
During his career he became Champion four times, three times Cup winner and one Supercup.
On international level he played for Portugal 23 times during a period of 14 years.
Today he is goalkeeping coach in the team of José Mourinho.
The shirt shown above was worn by him during the 1986/87 season.
