Benfica 1998 - Paulo Madeira

Paulo Sergio Braga Madeira was born on Sep. 6th, 1970 in Luanda/Angola. He startet his youth career at Lusitano in 1982 before a move to Benfica in 1987. He was called by Sven Goran Eriksson in 1989 into the first team and had his first match in Oct. 1989 against Belenenses. In his first season there was a lot of competition in the defense of the team and the lineups changed constantly. With Samuel and Ricardo Gomes being the most used central defenders, there was not a lot of space for him. Same thing happened in the following season and only in 1991, after Ricardo Gomes left, he grabbed his chance and was used regularly.
One year later and with Stefan Schwartz being first choice, the situation became uncomfortable again and so he was loaned to Maritimo in 1993. After his return he played one season and was sold to Belenenses in 1995 where he became a influential player and first choice.
Benfica, in the meantime, had two season well below expectations and needed to rebuild its defence. The choice fell on Paulo and he gained his place as a first choice for the following years to come. It were some of the worst in Benfica history but he still was one of the best and a solid anchor.
He left Benfica in 2001 with 224 matches played and 7 goals scored. He was Champion one time and also winner of the Cup once.
Further mentioning for him being part of the Sub20 World Cup winning team in 1989.
