Portugal 1986 - Fernando Mendes

Fernando Mendes nasceu em Setúbal a 5 de Novembro 1966, onde também começou a jogar futebol. Transferiu-se para o Sporting com 14 anos e estreou-se pela equipa principal no último jogo da época de 1984/85. Nos anos seguintes afirmou-se como lateral rápido, capaz de jogar todo o corredor esquerdo.
Na época de 1989/90, e após de 115 jogos, rescindiu contrato com o Sporting devido a ordenados em atraso e transferiu-se para o Benfica, mas nunca convenceu o treinador e assim apenas fez 36 jogos em três épocas. Após duas temporadas na Luz foi emprestado por um ano ao Boavista, onde voltou às boas exibições, e ajudou conquistar a Taça de Portugal.
A volta ao Benfica também não deu em bem e assim seguiu para o Estrala da Amadora e o Boavista. Mas foi no Belenenses que relançou a sua carreira e criou interesse por parte do FC Porto. Em 1996 foi contratado e tornou-se um de poucos jogadores que representaram os três grandes, mas o único que representou os cinco clubes que já foram Campeões Nacionais, embora o Boavista nesse tempo ainda não ter conquistado o seu titulo.
Fernando Mendes conquistou quatro Campeonatos, três Taças e cinco Supertaças.
Ele representou a Selecção 11 vezes durante uma década. A camisola apresentada foi a do seu primeiro jogo contra a Suécia em 1986.

Fernando Manuel Mendes was born in Setúbal on Nov. 5th, 1966, where he started playing football. At the age of 14 he started playing for Sporting Lisbon and went through the junior levels of the club and had his first appereance for the first team in the last match of the 1984/85 season. During the following years he confirmed his capacity as a left-back, able to do the full left side.
In 1989, after 115 matches, he resigned with Sporting and moved to rivals Benfica but failed to convince the coach Eriksson and was loaned to Boavista after two seasons. At the right time at the right place he helped the club to win the Cup but returned to Benfica after just one season where he failed again to convince.
After three seasons in total at Benfica e moved on to Estrela Amadora and another spell at Boavista but just at Belenenses he found his way back to top level. So Porto went on to sign him in 1996, so that he turned out to be one of a few playing for the big three, but the only one playing for all five clubs that ever won the Portuguese Championship, even though Boavista not having won their title at that time.
Fernando Mendes won four Championships, three cups and five Supercups.
He had 11 caps for Portugal, this shirt being the one out of his first match vs Sweden in 1986.
