Portugal 1993 - Paulo Sousa




Paulo Carvalho de Sousa foi um dos mais importantes jogadores que representaram Portugal no recente passdo. Nascido a 30 de Agosto 1970 em Viseu, começou a jogar futebol no Belenenses nas camadas jovens antes de se mudar para o Benfica dois anos mais tarde, em 1986, continuando como jovem.
O seu primeiro jogo como profissional fez logo contra o seu primeiro clube, o Belenenses, na primeira mao da Supertaça em 1989. Seguiram-se mais 3 épocas no Benfica, durante quias se sagrou Campeão, ganhou a Taça de Portugal e a Supertaça.
Em 1993 transferiu-se para o Sporting, depois de ter recindido o contrato com o SLB, e nos proximos 9 anos representou, nada mais, nada menos, que 7 clubes diferentes com grande successo. Com a Juventus e o Dortmund ganhou a Liga dos Campeões. Ele também ganhou a Taça Intercontinental e o Campeonato Italiano e a Taça. Como títulos pessoais ele foi eleito melhor estrangeiro do campeonato italiano. Mas várias lesões gráves travaram-no e fizeram para que ele não pôde continuar a dar o seu melhor para os clubes que representou.
A sua carreira representando Portugal começou em 1989, onde fez parte da equipa Sub20 que se sagrou Campeã do Mundo na Arábia Saudita.
Depois de jogar também para os Sub21, estreou-se como sénior em Janeiro 1991 num jogo particular contra a Espanha. Como peça fundamental da "geração de ouro" ele tomou contrôl no meio campo da Selecção a partir de 1993/94. Jogador com uma enorme visão de jogo e posicionamento tático ele várias vezes foi decisivo nas vitórias que levaram Portugal aos Campeonatos Europeus de 1996 e 2000.
Nomeado para o Mundial 2002 ele já não disputou jogo durante o torneio, sendo o amigável contra a China, durante a preparação, o seu último jogo com a camisola das quinas.
Depois de se retirar como jogador ele desempenhou a função de treinador da Selecção Sub16. A seguir o seu destino foi a Inglaterra onde representou o Queens Park Rangers, Swansea e Leicester. Na Hungria foi técnico do Videoton e ganhou a Supertaça em 2012.
Esta camisola foi utilizada por ele durante o jogo contra a Escócia em 1993, em que fez duas assistências.

Paulo Carvalho de Sousa was born on Aug. 30th, 1970 in Viseu. At the age of 13 he started playing for Os Belenenses in Lisbon. After two years he changed the club by signing for Benfica.
In 1989 he came of the bench for his first match as a professional, during the match vs. his first club Belenenses, for the Supercup. After 3 more years and titels of National Champion, Cup winner and the Supercup, he signed for archrivals Sporting, due to internal problems.
Just one year later he was signed by Juventus where he gained status of best foreign player of the year and won the Champions League in 1996, besides the Championship and the Cup.
Signed by Dortmund he managed to help the Club clinch the Champions League Cup again, followed by the Intercontinental Cup.
From 1997 on he had to fight several injuries that forced him to have longer stops. This gave him just short spells at his next Clubs. During a period of 4 years he played for 4 clubs, before he put an end to his career in 2002.
At the National Team he had his first cap during the 1989 Sub20 WC, that the team won later. His first cap as a senior followed in 1991 where he was one of the first of the "golden generation". In 1993/94 the new generation took over from the old stars and  Paulo Sousa was one of the fundamental players who guided Portugal to the first Euro in 1996 with his great positioning and tactical skills.
He also played at the Euro 2000 and was nominated for the 2002 WC, but made his last appearance during a friendly ahead of the start of the WC.
After ending his career, he started as a coach for the Portugal U16 team. Then he had a few spells in England before moving to Hungary, where he guided Videoton to the Supercup in 2012.
