Portugal 2005 - Fernando Meira

Fernando José da Silva Freitas Meira was born on 5th of June 1978 in Guimaraes, where he also started his career as football player. After he had his education at Vitória he was awarded a professional contract at the age of 18. It took a while to prevail but in the 99/00 season he became an important part of the team. This didn`t escape unnoted and in Summer of 2000 Benfica moved to sign him to reforce the defence and hoping to regain a title after many years since one. But even though he became first choice player and making more than 30 apereances, the club didn`t win any silverware. Financial problems were mounting and during the winter transfer period of 2001/02, Benfica agreed to sell him to VfB Stuttgart for a fee of €7.5m.
So coming to Germany, his most important period as a player was about to start. Stuttgart secured a player capable of playing as a central defender, but also as a stopper or defensive midfielder. Furthermore his height was not to underestimate on standard situations. During his spell, Stuttgart became a powerhouse again, always reaching spots eligible to play in European Cups, but once. In 2006, after long time captain Zvonimir Soldo left the club, he was elected new captain. He not only was the first portuguese teamcaptain in the Bundesliga, but also the first and onl so far to lift the Champions Trophy in Summer 2007.
Her left Stuttgart in summer 2008, after more than 200 matches and signed for Galatasaray, where he only played one season, before moving to Zenit St Petersburg. After two years he left Russia and signed for Real Zaragoza. Not being used often, he had a short spell at Aragonese. After being unable to find a new club he ended his player career in 2012.
For Portugal he played a total of 54 matches between 2000 and 2008. He was part of the team that became 4th during the 2006 WC and was also called to the team that played the 2008 Euro.
