Abel Luis da Silva Costa Xavier nasceu a 30 de Novembro 1972 em Nampula, Moçambique. Passou os seus primeiros 4 anos no país natal, antes de ir para Portugal, a viver com os seus avós. Viveu a maioria da sua infância com eles, apesar dos pais mais tarde também terem emigrado para Portugal. Tal como muitos rapazes, aprendeu a jogar futebol na rua, mas ja cedo iniciou a sua formação futebolistica no Sporting, onde permaneceu até aos 17 anos. Entretanto ja se tinha destacado de tal maneira que ja tinha feito parte dos escalões juniores das Seleções.
Dispensado pelo Sporting, pouco depois foi para o Estrela da Amadora que se aproveitava de jogadores novos, mas dispensados pelos grandes Clubes, e assim tornou-se, de alguma maneira, competitivo.
Estreou-se em 1989 e ja em 1990 jogou internacional porque o Estrela tinha ganho a Taça no mesmo ano. Seguiram-se três épocas bem sucedidas em quais cresceu e se tornou numa peca importante do clube. A sua posição foi de defesa central, mas também foi utilizado como lateral. Bom no jogo aéreo, também tinha um remate poderoso e apoiava as equipas no ataque.
Em 1993 quase voltava para o Sporting, mas felizmente escolheu o Benfica, onde deu mais um salto. Foi o "verão quente" em que Paulo Sousa e Pacheco deixaram o Benfica para rumarem ao Sporting, e houve mais jogadores a serem abordados pelos Leões. Foi então assim que o Benfica se reforçava com jogadores mais accessíveis e Abel Xavier assinou contrato com o clube da Luz. Depois de um início difícil porque passou a ser lateral direito e o veterano Veloso passou a ser lateral esquerdo, foi muito criticado, mas deu a resposta em campo. Tornou-se jogador importante e conquistou os corações de muitos adeptos, especialmente depois dos jogos contra o Bayer Leverkusen e o mítico 6:3 em Alvalade, que valeu o título.
A época seguinte, com a entrada de Artur Jorge ao comando técnico, não correu da melhor maneira, e tendo sido intransferível em 93/94 com alguns clubes interessados, em 95 a fila de interessados tinha dimínuida e restou o Bari que aceitou um empréstimo. Não correu muito bem, e voltando no fim da época para o Benfica, foi vendido a título definitivo ao Real Oviedo. Ao longo da sua longa carreira, representou 10 clubes estrangeiros em 7 campeonatos diferentes. Pendurou as suas botas em 2008, depois de duas épocas ao serviço do LA Galaxy.
A nível internacional foi extremamente bem succedido. Ganhou o Campeonato da Europa Sub16 em 1989 e em 1991 fez parte da equipa que se sagrou bicampeã mundial Sub20 em Lisboa. A falta de um título a nível sénior coíncidiu com o momento provavelmente mais doloroso, que decorreu em 2000 quando tocou com a mão na bola na grande área durante as meias finais contra a França. Houve muita confusão e injustiça em volta do acontecido, mas o facto foi que o penalti a favor da França ditou a nossa eliminação. A derrota da equipa portuguêsa, que jogou o mais belo futebol a nível internacional. Era nesse ano que mereciamos ter ganho o nosso primeiro Europeu. Mas a culpa certamente não foi de Abel Xavier.
Mais tarde iniciou carreira de treinador, e como se tivesse que ser, 40 anos depois voltou a Moçambique para ser o treinador dos Mambas.
Esta camisola foi utilizada por ele durante o jogo contra o AC Milão em 1995, a contar para os quartos finais da LC. A camisola tem a particularidade que o patch da LC mudou durante a época, sendo este o que se utilizou na 5a jornada contra o Hajduk e depois a partir dos quartos finais.
Abel Luis da Silva Costa Xavier was born on 30th of November 1972 in Nampula/ Mozmbique. He lived his first four years in his homecountry, before moving to Portugal in 1975 to live with his grandparents. He lived with them most of his youth, although his parents had immigrated to Portugal at some point. He started playing footbal on the streets, as many boys in that time did. At the age of 8 he entered the youth academy of Sporting, where he stayed until the age of 17, before being decomissioned. However, at this time he already had been called to the youth teams of the Selecao.
He moved to Estrela da Amadora and became an influential player. He was a central defender with a good airplay and also that what we today call "box to box", with a strong shot. During four seasons he gained the interest of Sporting and Benfica and almost made the way back to Sporting, but in the end he signed for us in 1993, that was called "the hot summer" due to some raids that Sporting made at Benfica by signing Pacheco and Paulo Sousa, and trying to sign more of our players.
So he started in 1993 and had a difficult start because he "stole" the spot of longtime Veteran Veloso as right-back. But all was forgotten with stellar exibitions vs Bayer Leverkusen and the unforgettable win at Alvalade with 6:3, that sealed the title. A season that started bad, turned out to become one of the most convincing.
The following season Artur Jorge returned to Benfica, this time as coach, and things became complicated. While Xavier was innegociable the season before and with some heavyweights wanting him, the qeue shortened and in the end he was loaned to Bari in 1995. After a hard season he returned to Benfica, but just to become tranferred to Real Oviedo in summer 1996. This was were he found his happy place and had two very good seasons. But before listing all his clubs, i`ll only summarize that he represented 10 different clubs in 7 different countries, among them Liverpool, AS Roma, Galatasaray and PSV.
On international level he was well succeeded. In 1989 he won the U16 Euro and two years later he became U20 World Champion. His probably most devastating moment was the semi final vs France at the 2000 Euro, where he touched the ball in the penalty area. A very unfortunate moment, that cost us the final, but certainly not only his fault. Probably the best Portugal team ever, that conquered the hearts of many, had to leave early.
Later he became coach and as if things have to end where they started, he returned to his himecountry 40 years later to become coach of the Mambas.
The shirt is out of a match vs Milan of the 1994/95 Champions league with the particularity that the CL patch changed during the season, and this was used vs Hajduk on the 5th matchday and later from the quarter-finals on.
