Benfica 2018 - Alfa Semedo

Aínda me lembro bem do jogo contra o FC Porto.

I still remember the day when we played FC Porto. A beautiful autumn day in Lisbon and one of the rare possibilities for me to watch a match at Luz stadium. Getting tickets was not easy, but a nice person helped me to source some and so i could attend the match with two familiy members.
The statium was fully packed and the crowd was almos euphoric. The results of the recent past were not realy favourable to us. Our last victory in a "Classico" dated four years back and  even before that our results were mostly poor. But this was already long gone and forgotten, as with a victory, we could pass Porto in the table and even reach first spot, that was held by Braga at that time.
The match itself was not really a celebration of football. It was hard and dirty at times. A total of 8 yellow and one red card were distributed. But the second half got better and Benfica had a better start with a few good chances. In the 62nd minute we were rewarded with the lead by Seferovic. It happened right in front of us and the crowd went mad. In the end we had to suffer a bit because of the red card to our defender Lema, but all were happy, including the team, that had secured first rank in the table.
What i also remember, and it was heavily discussed among our fans, was the choice of Songs. Especially the one when the players left the pitch. It was the pasodoble: Espana Cani, played at bullfights. Really a shame an inappropriate. As if Karma strikes back, that was the highlight of the first round, because things went on to deteriorate. After the 15th matchday, a defeat to Portimonense thet left us on 4th place, our coach Rui Vitória was sacked and replaced by Bruno Lage. The rest is history. In 19 matches we only had one draw and after matchday 24 regained first place that we kept till the end of season. Bruno Lage is again our coach at this moment.
This shirt was prepared for Guinea-Bissau midfielder Alfa Semedo. He arrived from his homecountry in 2014 and went through the Benfica academy for two years and was loaned to Vilafranquense in 2016. He caught the eye of the Moreirense scouts and was transferred in 2017. He almost immediately became starter and had a very good season at Moreira dos Cónegos. Benfica brought him back in 2018, but the decline that the team went through, led to his loaning in the winter transfer period to Espanyol Barcelona. In summer 2019 he joined Nottingham Forest and the following season Reding FC, both on loan. He returned to Portugal as Benfica and Vitoria Guimarães agreed on a transfer in 2021. In 2022 he moved to Saudi Arabia where he represented different clubs and still resides.

Today i have the pleasure to present one of my favourite shirts of the recent past. It`s a model created for the 2018 WC. I like it because it is quite simple but showing some subtle details that only can be notice by closer examination. For example the crosses on the front, that create a tri dimensional effect. Or the armillary sphere on the inside of the shirt. But, the most important details are the two patches, that identified Portugal as winners of the Euro2016 and the Nations League 2019.
Not only the shirt itself is a favourite of mine, but also the player, that i consider one of the best on his position/s. Raphaël Guerreiro was born on 22nd of December 1993 in Le Blanc-Mesnil/France as son to a portuguese immigrant and a french mother. During his infance and playing for the club of his hometown, he showed superior skills that earned him a call to refine his talent at the INF Clairefontaine, the National Football Institute of France. After three years he was sigend by SM Caen to complete his football education at the clubs academy. First a injury delayed his move, but in 2010 he made the step and was frequently used in the second team. At the age of 18 he signed his first professional contract and went on to represent the principal team. He managed to play every match and even was nominated to the team of the year.
Lorient saw the talent and signed him in the following season, 2013/14. His spell of 3 years terminated when Borussia Dortmund signed him just before the 2016 Euro. A signing that many didn`t understand, but at that time he had made more than 100 appereances for the first flight club in France, and after the Euro, his value skyrocketed. He arrived at Dortmund as European Champion and even was nominated for the Young Player of the Tournament Award, that went to his teammate Renato Sanches.
For seven years he called Dortmund his home, becoming one of the most cherished players when he was fit. But unfortunately along his carreer, he faced quite a few injuries that stopped him. On the other handside, his superior quality always allowed him to return in style and make it into the starting eleven.
In summer 2023 his contract at Dortmund wasn`t extended and so he moved as free agent to Bayern München.
With dual nationality he could have represented either country, and indeed he was called to represent France on junior level. That didn`t happen due to an injury at that time, and so it took until 2013 before portuguese representatives knocked at his door and he accepted. Starting to play for U21 of Portugal, he made his debut for the first team in 2014, scoring his first goal in his second match, due to his beforementioned quality. One of his best virtues is his versatility. He basically can play the whole left side. Funny fact: While he mostly plays as a leftback for the Selecao, in his club teams he occupies a more offensive position. His technical abilities help him even being a frequent goalscorer.
In 2015 he was played for the team that went to the U21 Final, and returned with the silver medal, just to make it better in 2016.
He represented Portugal in all the following tournaments but due to a recent injury he didn`t make it on the list for the Euro24.
Thank you Raphaël and get well soon.

Benfica 2018-2019 shirt

Above i show you today the new home kit of benfica for the upcoming season 2018/19. It still uses a button tab, but with only one button. The Polo like collar was dropped and instead replaced by a simple round collar.
The most obvious changes happened by basically not using white as contrast, except the three srtipes and the Adidas logo.
The material features a subtle pinstripe design in the same tone as the colour of the shirt.

Portugal Worldcup shirts 2018

Here they are: The new kits for Portugal´s Worldcup campaign in Russia.
The new kit turns to be more simple than its predecessor with basically the whole shirt being one tone of red. Only the sleeves differ a bit and boast the zig-zag design of Nikes new Vaporknit template. It promises to support increase airflow and better breathabilitiy. Even the crests have surpassed a diet and are now 64% lighter.
Around the neck is the only green part. It sublines the simple and elegant design of the new kit. The numbers will be golden, same as the swoosh.
On the white kit the design is less simple, but still as elegant. It features the meanwhile classic cross graphics, but in a large number on the front and that grow towards the centre of the shirt. On the back two stripes of red and green is seen on the neck. The numbers and swoosh here are red.

Portugal European Futsal Champion 2018

Finally Portugal won its first European title in Futsal. In the Final, the Seleção, defeated the Champion of 2016, Spain, in a dramatic match, where they were behind one goal, few seconds before the final whistle. In extra-time, Bruno Coelho converted a 10m freekick and sealed the result of 3:2.
Portugal not only reached the Final without conceeding a point, but was also the only team.
Congratulations to the team an staff that made this happen.
