Curiosamente a cidade do Barreiro sempre foi uma fonte de grandes jogadores que pisaram os relvados em Portugal, e alguns até de outros clubes além fronteiras. Nomes conhecidos no universo benfiquista, como Bento, Félix, José Augusto, Chalana, Arsénio ou Moreira foram recrutados na "fábrica".
Um deles também foi Adolfo António da Cruz Calisto, conhecido apenas por Adolfo. Nasceu a 1 de Janeiro 1944 no Barreiro e ja cedo encontrou o seu amor pelo futebol. Primeiro pelas ruas do Barreiro, e a partir dos m/m onze anos também nos treinos do Barreirense. Logo deu nas vistas, e não só pela altura. Primeiro como defesa esquerdo, tornou-se extremo e continuou a brilhar. As boas exibições e títulos despertaram interesse e assim estreiou-se pela Seleção de Setúbal e mais tarde também pela Seleção nacional de juniores.
Em 1961 estreia-se pela equipa principal e em 1962 foi emprestado ao Seixal onde jogou como avançado e conseguiu ser melhor marcador do campeonato e conseguir a promoção para a Primeira Liga. Voltou para o Barreiro, para assinar contrato profissional. Inícialmente jogando como avançado, voltou para defesa esquero por lesão do seu companheiro Pimenta, que ocupava entao esse lugar.
A 2 de Fevreiro 1965 faz a sua estreia na Seleção Nacional Militar e isso deu início para o seguinte passo na carreira. Apesar de ter havido vários interessentes nos seus serviços, decidiu ir para o Benfica em 1966, ja que José Augusto, que o conhecia bem, o convenceu ir para a Luz.
Ganhou o seu lugar na segunda época (1967/68), quando substituiu Fernando Cruz, que cumpriu um castigo federativo. Desde aí não houve época em que não fez menos de 20 jogos. Foi titular em 1968 na final de Wembley, onde o Benfica perdeu contra o Manchester, e Calisto foi o jogador que tinha como adversário, nada mais nada menos que George Best.
De resto seguiram-se várias épocas gloriosas onde, como defesa esquerdo de raíz, brilhou durante anos. Graças á sua polivalência, que ganhou a jogar em posições diferentes, interpretou a sua posição de uma maneira moderna. Percorria a ala esquerda por completo e ganhou assim a alcunha "Locomotiva".
Ele fez parte da equipa de 1972/73, que foi campeã, sem uma derrota. Em total foi campeão seis vezes, e ganhou três Taças. Jogou em mais de 200 partidas, marcando cinco golos. Deixou o Benfica em 1975, e voltou mais tarde para executar várias funções dentro do clube.
A camisola apresentada foi utilizada por ele durante a época de 1971/72.
Faleceu precisamente ha um ano e por isso queria deixar aqui esta pequena homenagem a um dos nossos maiores jogadores.
Interestingly the city of Barreiro on the southbank of the Tejo river has produced many portuguese talents along time. Names well known to the Benfica fans, like Arsénio, Félix, Moreira, José Augusto, Bento or Chalana had their roots in this area, called the "fabric".
One of them was Adolfo António da Cruz Calisto, known by Adolfo. He was born on 1st of January 1944 and already at early age found his love in football. First on the streets of Barreiro, and at the age of round about 11 at the Barreirense FC. He started as a leftback and did very well. Later he became left winger and shone again. This earned him caps at the district representative team and even a call on junior national team level.
In 1961 he played his first match for the first team, while still being junior. In the following season he was loaned to Seixal and underwent a change in position. As a striker he became best scorer in that year and helped the team being promoted to the first league. He returned to Barreirense in 1963 and signed a professional contract and play as striker, but a injury of the leftback at that time forced the coach to put him back to his native position.
During his military service in 1965 he was called to represent Portugal in the military team, and after his return the interest in his services rose sharply. But the beformetioned José Augusto knew him well and convinced him to sign for Benfica, and so he did in 1966.
He had to wait patiently for his chance to play for the first team, and played for the reserve team in that time. But midseason 1967/68, he got the opportunity to replace Fernando Cruz, and he grabbed it. From then on, he never played less than 20 matches per season. He played the 1968 ECC Final at Wembley and his opponent was noone else than George Best.
After that he had may successful years at Benfica where he mostly had the role of leftback. Thanks to his experience gained in his youth, he showed a modern interpretation of his position. He generally used the whole left corridor what eraned him the nickname "locomotive".
He also was part of the "class of 1972/73" that won the championship without a single defeat. In total he won six championships and three cups. In 1975 he left the club as player, but returned later to work in different positions.
The shirt was used by him during the 1971/72 season.
He left us precisely one year ago, and so i wanted to pay a little tribute to a man that has left his marks within the club.
