José de Jesus Mendes was born on 16th of Jan. 1947 in Setúbal. He played as a central defender, more or less, his whole carreer at his hometown, for Vitória de Setúbal.
He was part of the base team that was the "golden era" of the club in the early 70s. Right in his first year as a pro in 1966/67 he helped the club win the second Cup for the club. As mentioned before, the early 70s were the most successful years, when Vitória became Vice Champion two times and was a constant participant in the Europen Cups.
He had a short spell of two seasons at Sporting, before returning home and in his late years he represented Amora FC and UFCI, before hanging his boots in 1982.
He played for Portugal 8 times, being called at least 9 times. I`m saying this because this shirt is benchworn by him. His first match was vs Belgium in Nov 1971 and his last cap resulted from a match vs Italy in 1976.
This shirt is quite interesting because it was not made by the usual outfitteres. It`s probably the only time Portugal wore Umbro. It happened during the match vs Scotland at Hampden Park in 1971.
