Hans Jörg Butt was the second german goalkeeper playing for Benfica, after much cherished Robert Enke. A bit different to him, as Butt struggled to become first choice against Quim. In the end he only made 7 apperances.
In 1997 he was signed by Hamburger SV and quickly gained starting spot for the years to come. He left Hamburg in 2001 after 133 matches and signed for Leverkusen, just to do the same and becoming first choice quickly. His first season could have been where every dream of a footballer came true, but in the end they ended second in the Championship, lost the Chamions League Final to Real Madrid and leter the Cup Final to Schalke. Coincidence or not, Benfica had the same desatrous outcome a few years later.
Until that he only had missed four matches in 10 years, but after being sent off in a match, he lost his starting spot and didn`t regain it. So he and Leverkusen decided to mutually terminate his contract, so that he could start a new adventure.
The new adventure was Benfica, but it was tough for him to settle, as i learnd in a conversation with him. The language and different methods and mentalities made it a bit hard for him, but he didn`t cause problems and accepted what the coach decided. He got his chance during a match vs Marítimo Funchal, when Quim was sent off due to a foul inside the box. Butt came in and defended the penalty. He was a specialist for penalties. Not only did he defend many, but he also socred them. During his carreer he scored 26 goals, all from the spot. But it should become his only match in the Liga. He added four more in the Cup and three dor the League Cup.
After resigning with befinca he joined Bayern München as a free agent in 2008. He stayed in München for four seasons, adding two more Champions League Finals to his CV.
This shirt is special for me as i got it directly after the match vs Shakthar Donezk on the pitch.
Thank you!
