Benfica 2000 - Robert Enke

Quando as primeiras Notícias surgiram, que Robert Enke se tinha matado encontrava me em Portugal e notei a consternação que essa novidade trouxe. Nao demorou muito e os noticiários tinham só esse tema. Eu lembro-me que não percebi qual podia ter sido a razão que levou um homem tão novo a uma decisão dessas. Só alguns dias mais tarde é que soube que ele sofreu de depressões fortes. Comemora-se agora o primeiro aniversario e por isso quero aproveitar a oportunidade para apresentar uma camisola de um jogador que marcou o Benfica.
Robert Enke nasceu 24 de Agosto 1977 em Jena, na Alemanha. Ele iniciou a sua carreira profissional no clube da sua cidade natal, FC Carl Zeiss Jena em 1995. Mas só um ano mais tarde ele estreou se pelo Borussia Mönchengladbach. Durante as primeiras duas épocas ele não jogou, mas em 1998 ele foi titular indiscutível.
Em 1999 o Benfica esteve a procurar um guarda redes que seria capaz de preencher a vaga que Preud'homme deixou. O novo técnico Jupp Heynkes apercebeu se da sua qualidade e pediu a sua contratação. E assim Enke rumou à Luz em 1999. Ele logo foi a escolha principal do treinador e não desiludiu. Durante três épocas ele envergou a camisola do Benfica e mostrou que tinha amor a ela. Já depois de Heynckes ter deixado o Benfica, ele tornou-se capitão da equipa. As razões para a sua saída do clube foram várias, mas uma certamente foi a falta de sucesso. Durante a sua estadia em Lisboa o Benfica não conseguiu qualquer título e assim ele aproveitou o seu bom mercado e transferiu-se para o Barcelona.
Mas no clube catalão ele não se conseguiu impor à concorrência forte e assim foi emprestado ao Fenerbace e ao Tenerife, antes de assinar contrato com o Hannover 96 em 2004. Foi dois anos mais tarde que a sua filha faleceu com dois anos de idade. Ela sofria de um problema cardíaco. Desde ai nada foi como era. A Depressão tomou controlo dele e pouca gente soube disso.
Ele sempre manteu contacto com pessoas em Portugal, onde se sentiu muito bem, e queria voltar a jogar para o Benfica. Já não houve tempo para realizar esse desejo.

When the first headlines came up that Robert Enke had comitted suicide i was on holidays in Portugal. I quickly realised the sadness that this news brought. It didn´t take too much time and the papers and TV was reporting about the case. At that time it was pire speculation what brought a young man to take such a decision. Only a few days later the public got to know that he suffered of depressions.
Robert Enke was born on Aug. 24th, 1977 in Jena, Germany. It was for the club of his hometown, FC Carl Zeiss Jena, that he iniciated his professional carreer in 1995. Just one year later he was signed by Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he had to stay on the bench for the first two seasons. It was in 1998 when he became first choice but couldn´t avoid the relegation.
At that time Benfica was looking for a goalie to replace Preud'homme, who ended his carreer. The new coach Jupp Heynckes was sure about his qualities and so Benfica signed the young player. During three seasons at Benfica he really prooved that he wore his shirt with dignity and passion. After Heynckes had left the club, he even became captain. The reasons for leaving the club were multiple, but one for sure was the lack of success and so he took advantage of Barcelona being interested in him and signed for the spanish giants.
But things went wrong and he never managed to get the same status as in Lisbon. So he loaned to Fenerbace and Tenerife before signing for Hannover in 2004.
When his daughter died at the age of two, it was a shock of which he never recovered. Even looking well, deep inside him the depression took control of him. Only few people knew what was going on.
He had a good time, maybe his best, in Portugal and had kept in touch with people out of his time in Lisbon and just a few months before he died, he said that he wanted to play for Benfica again. A wish that was not to become true...

Portugal 2010 - Ricardo Carvalho

Hoje apresento aqui uma camisola de um dos melhores centrais do mundo, Ricardo Carvalho.
Ricardo Carvalho nasceu a 18 de Maio 1978 em Amarante. Foi no clube da sua cidade natal que deu os primeiros pisos no relvado até que foi descoberto pelos "Scouts" do FC Porto. Em 1996 transferiu-se para as camadas jovens do FC Porto. Entre 1997 e 2001 foi emprestado a vários clubes, como Leça e Alverca.
Foi em 2002 que finalmente representou o dono dos direitos desportivos e com José Mourinho ao comando sagrou-se Campeão Nacional e venceu a Taça UEFA. Dentro de uma só época marcou o futebol europeu. Na época seguinte as coisas ainda correram melhor e acabou com o titulo na Liga dos Campeões. As suas excelentes exibições, que lhe valeram o titulo de melhor defesa do torneio, levaram o Chelsea FC a pagar uma verba a rondar os €30m para garantir o passe dele. Seguiram-se 6 anos ao mais alto nível, que começaram difícil, mas deram na conquista de três Campeonatos, três Taças e duas Taças da Liga.
Ao fim da época passada ele voltou a cruzar o caminho de José Mourinho, ao qual se juntou no Real Madrid.
Na Selecção Nacional passou por todos os escaloes antes de se estrear na Selecção A em 2003 contra a Albania. Ele fez parte a equipa que chegou à Final do Euro 2004 e desde ai os seus serviços foram indispensáveis. Em 2006 ele chegou ás meias finais do Campeonato Mundial e foi votado um lugar no "All Star Team".
Eu sou um grande admirador das suas qualidades e acho que a sua força mental e a capacidade de ler o jogo, juntamente com uma técnica superior para um central, coloca-o entre os melhores defesas do mundo há vários anos.
Esta camisola foi preparada para ele durante o Mundial 2010 para o jogo contra a Espanha.

I´m proud to display a shirt of one of the best central defenders of the world, Ricardo Carvalho.
He was born on May 18th of 1978 in Amarante. First he started at the club of his hometown where he soon was spotted by the scouts of FC Porto, who signed him in 1996.
Between 1997 and 2001 he played on a loan basis for several Clubs like Leca and Alverca. In 2002 he finally made it into the team of FC Porto and under the reign of José Mourinho he was gradually formed to become well known all over Europe by winning the UEFA Cup in the same season, adding it to the domestic title.
The following season was even better, as Porto won the Champions League and his contribution had a huge impact on the success. After this fantastic year Chelsea offered €30m to FC Porto and signed him. During the next six years he became even better and helped Chelsea win it´s first League title in 50 years. Two more followed and he added three FA Cups, two League Cups and two Community Shields.
At the beginning of this season he joined José Mouinho again at Real Madrid, that signed him for a fee of 6,7m GBP.
At the Portuguese National Team he made it through all stages of youth teams before having his first cap in October 2003 vs. Albania. He was part of the team that reached the Final at the Euro2004 tournament a was voted into the All Star Team two years later, where Portugal reached the semis.
I´m a huge fan of him and think that his mental strenght and his ability to read a game, paired with a superb technique puts him onto the list of the best defenders of the world.

Benfica 1998 - Pembridge

Mark Anthony Pembridge nasceu a 29 de Novembro 1970 no Pais de Gales. Começou a sua carreira no Luton Town em 1989 onde permaneceu até 1992. A sua proxima equipa foi o Derby County que representou por mais três anos. Ao contrário da sua primeira etapa de carreira, no Derby foi regularmente utilizado, fazendo um total de 140 jogos e marcando 37 golos. Em 1995 então foi vendido ao Sheffield Wednesday que também representou por três épocas.
A sua posição habitual era a de médio esquerdo e assim ele conseguiu desenvolver o seu talento que finalmente despertou o interesse do Benfica em 1998. O então treinador Graeme Souness quis que ele rumasse ao Glorioso, já que podia se transferir a custo zero.
A sua estreia começou logo muito bem, com o jogo de apuramento para a fase de grupos da Liga dos Campeões. No seu primeiro jogo logo marcou dois golos ao Beitar Jerusalem, mas infelizmente só consegiu mais um durante a época inteira. Mesmo assim foi um dos mais utilizados jogadores dessa época já que mostrava constantemente exibições muito regulares. Ele teve dificuldade em se adaptar no Benfica, também pela razão de muitas vezes não poder jogar na sua posição habitual e assim um ano depois, com apenas 28 jogos disputados, foi vendido ao Everton por 800.000 Libras.
Seguiram se muitas lesões mas sempre lutando, conseguiu jogar até aos 36 anos e terminar a sua carreira no Fulham.
Pembridge representou o seu pais natal por 54 vezes, marcando 6 golos.
A camisola apresentada foi vestida por ele no jogo da Liga dos Campeões contra o HJK Helsinquia.

Mark Anthony Pembridge was born on Nov. 29th 1970 in Wales.
He started his professional career at Luton Town in 1989 where he played three years. After beeing sold to Derby County in 1992 he managed to find his place in the team and established himself as a left midfielder. In three sucessful years he had 140 appereances and scored 37 times. Sheffield Wednesday signed him for GBP 900.000 and again he stayed for three seasons at a club before leaving for Benfica in 1998.
Former Benfica coach Graeme Souness wanted him to play in Lisbon and after a disappointing season at Wednesday he moved on to play in Portugal. He started very well, in his very first appereance vs Beitar Jerusalem he scored twice. Unfortunately he just added one more goal during the whole season. Nevertheless he was a regular option for Souness as he showed good exibitions and was quite versatile. He struggled to settle in Lisbon, maybe because he often had to play as leftback instead of his prefered position in the left midfield.
So he left Benfica after just one year for a fee of GBP 800.000 to Everton. Even beeing hit hard by several injuries, he played until the age of 36 in 2006, ending his career at Fulham.

Benfica 2009 - Cardozo

Oscar "Tacuara" Cardozo nasceu a 20 de Maio 1983.
Ele deu os seus primeiros passos a nível profissional em 2003 para 3 de Febrero onde permaneceu dois anos, antes de se transferir para o Club Nacional. Aí permaneceu por quase três épocas, tornando-se no melhor ponta-de-lance da equipa, com uma média de quase um golo cada dois jogos.
Foi o seu talento que disparou o interesse dos Newell´s Old Boys da Argentina, em 2006. Na Apertura e Clausura da Argentina conseguiu marcar 11 golos em 16 jogos. Os bons resultados e o seu bom rendimento levaram-no ao título de melhor jogador paraguaio de 2006.
Em Junho 2007 o Benfica conseguiu garantir os seus serviços para o clube. Por uma verba rondar os €11m, foi adquirido o seu passe. Logo na sua primeira época ele mostrou as suas qualidades, especialmente nas Competições Europeias, onde marcou um total de quatro golos. Na Liga apontou 14 golos e desde a sua chegada sempre conseguiu superar a sua marca do ano anterior.
Na época passada foi o melhor marcador da Liga, com 26 golos e teve uma parte fundamental na conquista do título de Campeão. Ele também foi melhor marcador na Liga Europa com 10 golos em 13 jogos. Até hoje ele é o segundo melhor marcador estrangeiro do Benfica com 79 golos.
Para o Paraguai disputou 33 partidas, marcando quatro golos.
A camisola apresentada foi utilizada por ele durante o jogo contra o Olhanense, em qual ele marcou um "hat trick".

Oscar "Tacuara" Cardozo was born on May 20th 1983.
He started playing Football at 2nd divison 3 de Febrero, where he stayed for two seasons, before moving to Club Nacional. There the stayed for almost 3 seasons, managing an average of one goal each two matches.
Newell´s Old Boys from Argentina signed him in 2006 where he scored 11 times in 16 matches. His good performances led him to the title of best paraguaian player in 2006. An award he managed to win again in 2009.
In June of 2007 Benfica signed him for a fee of €11m to become second most expensive signing of the club. Already in his first season he showed a lot of his skills, especially during the European Competitions. This helped the club to progress to the UEFA Cup. He contributed a total of four goals to Benficas exibition.
Last season he had a crucial impact on Benficas performance during the season that ended with the title. He socred a total of 26 goals in the league and 10 in the Europe League, what made him best scorer in both competitions. Until today he socred 79 goals for Benfica and he is now second best foreigner on the scoreboard.

Portugal 1964 - José Torres

Faleceu ontem, após prolongada doença, José Torres, com 71 anos de idade. Ele já há muitos anos lutava contra a doença Alzheimer.
O "Bom Gigante" foi uma das maiores figuras que o futebol português produziu. Começou a jogar futebol em Torres Novas em 1957 onde marcou 105 golos pelo clube da sua terra natal. O Benfica apercebeu se dessa "joia" e assim foi transferido para a Luz dois anos mais tarde. Foi ai que viveu os seus momentos de glória, mas demorou quase três anos até que foi jogador indiscutível no onze inicial, tirando o lugar a uma outra estrela do clube: José Águas. Durante de 12 temporadas ele foi Campeão Nacional nove vezes. Ele também jogou três Finais Europeias mas infelizmente nunca conseguiu inscrever o seu nome na História dos vencedores dessa competição.
Em 1971 foi para o Vitória Setúbal e quatro anos mais tarde para o Estoril Praia, onde terminou a sua carreira como jogador em 1980.
Na Selecção Nacional foi jogador regular nos anos 60 e disputou um total de 33 jogos, marcando 14 golos. Em 1966 fez parte dos "Magriços" que deram tanta alegria a todo o mundo, e terminaram em terceiro lugar. Como Seleccionador ele levou Portugal à primeira participação numa Fase Final de um Mundial, desde que ele participou como jogador. Isso foi em México em 1986.
A alcunha de "Bom Gigante" foi lhe dado pela sua boa disposição e as atitudes correctas e honestas em campo. Ironicamente esta camisola foi utilizada durante um jogo contra a Inglaterra no Brasil, para comemorar o 50° aniversário da CBF, durante qual lhe foi mostrado o único cartao da sua carreira pela Selecção. Foi um vermelho por protestos, por o árbitro invalidar um golo limpo dele!

José Torres pased by yesterday after a long period of illness. He suffered from Alzheimer and died at the age of 71, just five days ahead of his birthday.
The "Good Giant", as he was nicknamed due to his fair play and good mood, was one of the biggest names in Portuguese Football. He initiated his career in 1957 at his home club Torres Novas where he scored an incredible 105 goals in two years. Benfica heard of this guy and signed him right away in 1959. But it took him three years before he became a regular player in 1962. He forced another Benfica legend out on the bench: José Águas, but his coach was prooved right as Torres became best scorer in the league that year.
During 12 seasons for Benfica he was Natinal Champion nine times and played three European Cup Finals but never managed to lift the trophy.
In 1971 he moved on to Vitória Setúbal and four years later to Estoril Praia, where he ended his carreer in 1980.
In the 60´s he was a regular player for the portuguese National Team. His biggest success was the 3rd place at the WC 1966 in England. As a coach he managed the team that was the first to participate in a WC since he played there in 1966. It was in 1986 in Mexico.
I already explained why he was given the name "Good Giant" but ironically the shirt i show here was worn by him during a match vs. England where he was shown the only card in his career for Portugal. It was a straight red card for protesting against a disalowed goal that afterwards was proven a correct goal!

Portugal 1996 - Simão

Os últimos dias para Simão Sabrosa devem ter sido emocionantes. Primeiro anunciou a sua despedida sa Seleccão e ontem acabou por conquistar a Supertaça Europeia com o seu clube Atlético Madrid.
Simão Pedro Fonseca Sabrosa nasceu a 31 de Outubro 1979 em Vial Real. Iniciou a sua carreira como futebolista jovem no Diogo Cão e um ano mais tarde, em 1992, transferiu se para o Sporting onde jogou os proximos cinco anos pelas camadas jovens.
Em 1997 fez o seu primeiro jogo pela equipa principal do Sporting e iniciou a sua carreira profissional logo como marcador. Dois anos mais tarde e depois de 53 jogos e 12 golos pelo Sporting, foi transferido para o Barcelona por €15m. Permaneceu lá dois anos, mas sem relevar o seu talento completo e assim voltou para Portugal em 2001, sendo o seu destino o Benfica.
Desde essa data a sua carreira começou a evoluir e ele tornou se num dos mais acarinhados jogadores e capitão da equipa.
Em 2005 finalmente, depois de onze anos de angustia, ele guiou a equipa ao título de Campeão Nacional. No ano seguinte o Benfica participou na Liga dos Campeões, sendo o maior feito a passagem aos quartos de final, deixando o detentor do título, o Liverpool FC, atrás. Foi uma eliminatória emocionante em qual Simão também foi autor de um dos três golos.
Depois de muitas tentativas de assegurar os seus serviços, por parte de clubes estrangeiros, nos dois anos seguintes ele finalmente seguiu o seu caminho para o seu clube actual: Atlético de Madrid. Deixou o Benfica, tendo disputado 172 jogos e marcado 76 golos. Para mais conquistou um Campeonato Nacional e uma Taça, mais uma Supertaça.
Em Madrid conseguiu o que anteriormente não tinha conseguido: um título internacional. O Atlético conquistou a primeira edição da Liga Europa e ontem a Supertaça Europeia contra o Inter de Milão.
Na Selecção Nacional ele teve um início de carreira promissor. Em 1996 Portugal sagrou-se Campeão Europeu de Sub16 e Simão foi melhor marcador do torneio. A sua primeira chamada à Seleccão principal ocorreu em 1998 e precisamente a 18 de Novembro ele fez o seu primeiro jogo contra o Israel. Seguiram-se mais 84 jogos e um total de 22 golos, mas sem mais um título internacional.
Obrigado Simão por tudo o que fizeste por Portugal e muitas felicidades no futuro!
A camisola apresentada foi a que utilizou na Final do Campeonato Europeu Sub16 em 1996 contra a França. Foi assinada por o plantel como se pode ver.

The last few days certainly have been very emotive for Simão. Two days ago he announced his retirement of the National Team and yesterday he won the European Supercup with his team Atlético Madrid.
Simão Pedro Fonseca Sabrosa was bor on Oct. 31st of 1979 in Vila Real. He started playing football at a small club called Diogo Cão but was soon was discovered by scouts of Sporting Lisbon an just one year later, in 1992, he was signed by the club. The follwoing five years he played for the youth teams of Sporting before beeing introduced to the first team in 1997. In his very first appereance for Sporting he netted his first goal.
Two years later and after having played 53 matches and scored 12 goals, Barcelona was his next destination. The spanish giants signed him for a fee of app. €15m in summer of 1999. His time there didn´t produce the expected returns and just two years later he went back to Portugal where he was offered a contract at Benfica Lisbon. Many people believe that this was the turning point in his career. He soon became one of the most supported players of the team and the fans just loved him. It didn´t take too much time and he was named as captain of the team.
The club had a quite long time without winning any silverware but success was about to return in 2004 when Benfica lifted the Cup. One year later Simão lead the team to it´s first Championship in 11 years. The year later Benfica had a remarkable CL campaign where they reached the quarter finals, leaving Liverpool behind that won the "Kop" in the previous season.
After been pursuit by different clubs in the years 2005 and 2006, Simão decided to change his mind and left Benfica for a €20m fee and headed to Madrid to represent Atlético. At this club he finally managed to win an international club title by conquering the first edition of the Euro League last year. Yesterday he helped his club winning the Supercup Final vs. Inter.
At the National Team he had a promising start in 1996 at the U16 Euro Championship. Portugal won the title and Simão was awarded as best scorer. In 1998 he had his first cap at the senior team vs. Israel and there were 84 matches to follow. In total he scored 22 goals.
This shirt was worn by him during the Final of the U16 Euro Championship vs. France in 1996 and has been signed by the whole team.

Benfica 1989 - Hernani

Hernâni Madruga das Neves foi um médio formado no Vitória Setúbal no início dos anos 80 e teve uma subida enorme pouco depois para a 1a equipa do clube. Não demorou muito e ele tinha se tornado a grande figura da equipa onde permaneceu até 1988.
O Benfica não hesitou e contratou-o antes do fim da época 87/88. Mas a estreia começou mal com uma lesão. Depois de ter recuperado ele voltou como o público o conhecia: muito forte, uma boa leitura de jogo e com grande dedicação. Assim tirou o lugar a Elzo e tomou controle no meio campo, servindo melhor o ataque e os jogadores mais ofensivos.
O pior chegou depois do derbi contra o Sporting em Dezembro na Luz. Ele ainda foi o melhor em campo mas teve um controlo antidoping positivo. Acusou cocaína, mas diz-se que o teste seria de um colega e ele apenas tomou a responsabilidade para outro jogador. Foi suspenso por 3 meses mas a época dele já teria terminado.
Na época 1989/90 voltou a atacar e conseguiu ser titular a partir de metade da época. Formou uma dupla forte no meio campo com Jonas Thern e ajudou a equipa chegar à Final da Taça dos Campeões.
Em seguida começou o seu calvário de lesões e nunca mais voltou a ser titular. Durante os 4 anos seguintes no clube nem conseguiu alinhar em 10 jogos em total.
Em 1997 terminou a sua carreira de futebolista profissional. A partir de 1998 iniciou uma carreira de Futebol de praia e tornou se num dos melhores jogadores do mundo dessa modalidade dando um sabor ao que ele podia ter chegado como futebolista se as coisas tivessem corrido melhor.
Ele sagrou se campeão por 3 vezes e ganhou uma Taça de Portugal. Como futebolista de praia limito-me a contar apenas os mais importantes dos seus inúmeros títulos: 1x Fifa Beach Soccer Worldcup, 2x Mundialito, 5x Euro Beach Soccer Cup, 3x Euro BeachSoccer League, Melhor Jogador no Mundialito e FIFA Soccer WC.
Esta camisola foi utilizada por ele no fim da época 1989/90, depois de o fornecedor ter mudado para Hummel em Abril de 1990.

Hernâni Madruga das Neves started playing football at Vitória Setúbal in 198, where his talent was spotted soon and lifted him into the first squad. Within a very short time he rose to become the most important player of the team.
Benfica signed him for the 1988/89 season where he had a bad start. He was injured, but after recovering he came back as the public knew him: powerful with good skills and a fine tactical understanding. Soon he gained a place in the starting line up, but the worst was still to come: After the derby vs. Sporting in Dec. 1988, he was tested positive on cocaine. Until today the details still remain arguable. He always claimed that he never took drugs and not just a few people say that the probes of two players were switched.
With 3 months of abscence the season ended for him and it took him some time in the next season to regain a spot in the starting lineup. After he managed it, he built a superbe midfield with Jonas Thern that guided the team to the Final of the Champions Cup vs. Milan, lost 0:1.
In the following season bad luck came back and he was seriously injured. During his following 4 years at Benfica he didn´t even play 10 matches due to injuries.
After a few more years at lower scaled clubs he ended his career as professional footballer in 1997.
In 1998 he started playing Beach soccer and at this sports he showed what he might have been in football. He won 1 FIFA Beach Soccer WC, 2x Mundialitos, 5x Euro Beach Soccer Cups, 3x Euro Beach Soccer Leagues and was named MVP several times.
