Benfica 1988 - Vata

Faz hoje 31 anos da famosa noite da "mão de Vata" que nos carimbou a passagem a Final da TCE. 

Mas antes de chegar aí deu algumas voltas e de certeza que não imaginava isso quando saiu do seu país natal, a Angola, onde tinha nascido a 19 de Março 1961. Em 1983 chegou a Portugal para representar o R.D. Águeda e na época seguinte o Varzim. Permaneceu lá durante quatro épocas com resultados bons e menos bons, mas com muitos golos marcados. Possuiu um forte pé direito e um excelente jogo aereo. 

Em 1988 o Benfica teve que encontrar um substituto para Rui Águas, que tinha deixado o clube a curto prazo. Encontrou-se Vata Matanu Garcia que logo na sua época inicial foi melhor marcador da Liga e ajudou a conquistar o Campeonato. Na sua segunda temporada na Luz aconteceu o jogo ja mencionado. Era dia 18 de Abril na Luz em frente de ca de 100mil adeptos que o Benfica tinha que dar volta ao resultado da primeira mão, que foi favorável ao Olympique de Marselha por 2:1. Perto do fim, aos 83 minutos, um canto de Valdo foi desviado por Magnusson e a bola chegou a Vata, que, como ele aínda hoje diz, com o ombro foi empurrada para dentro da baliza... Um delirio total no estádio e o OM de Bernard Tapie, com jogadores como Jean-Pierre Papin, Mozer, Chris Waddle etc, ficou pelo caminho, enquanto nós fomos a nossa 7a final dos Campeões. A ultima até hoje... Graças à "Mão de Vata".

Aínda hoje essa história é passada aos mais novos e Vata continua um jogador acarinhado e admirado pela massa associativa, mesmo tendo ficado no Benfica apenas por três épocas. Obrigado grande Vata por tudo que deu ao Benfica.

 

On this date 31 years ago was the famous night of "Vatas hand" that granted us a spot in the Final of the ECC.

But before that it took a few twists and turns in life, and i am sure he didn`t imagine such a thing when he left his homecountry Angola, where he was born on 19th of March 1961, in 1983 to sign for R.D. Águeda. The foloowing year he signed for Varzim SC, where he spent 4 years and developed very good skills as a striker. Famous for his right food and his excellent airplay, he was quite a successful goalgetter.

In 1988 Benfica had to replace Rui Águas, who left the club quite surprisingly, and the choice was Vata Matanu Garcia, who became best goalscorer of the league right in his first season and helped win the title. In the following season was when the above mentioned match happened. It was the 18th of April 1990 in front of 100k spectators where Benfica had to overcome a 1:2 disadvantage vs Olympique Marseille to advance to the final. OM at that time was a european powerhouse with players like Jean-Pierre Papin, Mozer or Chris Waddle, but in the 83rd minute a cornekick by Valdo was filcked over by Magnusson before it reached Vata who still claims the ball hit his shoulder before ending up in the net. However, the stadium went crazy and Benfica sealed it 7th ECC Final, our last so far. Argentine had the "hand of god", while we have "Vata`s hand".

This story is still passed on by the elder to the kids and Vata remains in our hearts and is cherished as a hero, despite having only stayed during three years at Benfica.

Portugal 2020 - Ruben Dias

Ja tinha resumido um pouco a carreira profissional de Rúben Dias neste post. Por isso não me irei repetir, mas juntar mais alguns dados recentes. 

Depois de ir para o Manchester City, Rúben Dias retomou o seu papel como figura líder, que ja tinha indo desempenhando nos seus ultimos tempos enquanto jogador do S.L.B. As suas prestações em campo ajudaram para que também os seus companheiros aceitaram essa posição, e assim ele, apesar de estar num país novo e desconhecido, ja agora parece ser uma peça indispensável no sistema de jogo do seu clube actual. A imprensa está rendida à sua qualidade, que nós benfiquistas sentimos muita falta, e vê nele, mesmo sendo tão novo, o sucessor nato de Vincent Kompany. 

Na seleção ele vai crescendo cada vez mais e, igual como no seu clube, é um jogador fundamental para garantir a continuidade dela. Ha pessoas que vêm nele um futuro líder dentro e fora do campo. 

A camisola apresentada é especial porque se trata da sua camisola com qual marcou os seus primeiros golos pela seleção. Sim, não foi apenas um golo, mas um bi que apontou como defesa central num só jogo. Obrigado por cumprir a palávra com a camisola e tudo de bem para o futuro.

I alreday recapped a bit about the carreer of Rúben Dias in this post, so i will add only a bit about the recent past in this one.

After having signed with Manchester City, it didn`t take too long to rise as a leader on the pitch, that he was already when he left Benfica last summer. His constantly good results in matches helped that his teammates accept his leadership functions, and despite him being new to a country and club, it looks as if he is already an essential piece in the playing tactics of the team. Even the press praises his skills and quality and calls him the (possible) successor of Vincent Kompany.

In the national team he eveloves more and more and already is a fundamental player to his coach Fernando Santos. There are people that see him a possible leader of the team in the future.

The shirt is quite special as it is the one in which he scored his first goals for the national team. Right, i said goals, as he did not only score one, but two. Not bad for a central defender.

Benfica 2013 - Miralem Sulejmani

Miralem Sulejmani foi contratado em 2013 como um dos mais talentosos jogadores europeus e com a ideia de criar mais opções pelas alas. Ele prefere o corredor esquerdo, mas também é capaz de ocupar o lado direito.

Ele nasceu na Servia a 5 de Dezembro 1988 e passou a maioria da sua formação no Partizan Belgrado. Com apenas 18 anos foi contratado pelo Heerenveen onde jogou ano e meio e marcou 15 golos em 34 jogos. No verão de 2008 foi contratado pelo Ajax, e tornou-se a contratação nacional mais cara com €16m. Durante os proximos 5 anos demonstrou qualidade e foi peça importante para os titulos do clube em 2011 e 2012. Em 2012 sofreu uma lesão gráve e esteve fora dos relvados durante 7 mêses. O seu acordo com o Benfica, que o contratou a custo zero, não caiu bem no clube e assim terminou a época na equipa B.

Em 2013 o Benfica contratou-o como arma polivalente para reforçar as alas. Mesmo com forte concorrência de Nico Gaitan, Salvio ou Lazar Markovic, ele conseguiu ganhar a sua parte do bolo e foi utilizado regularmente. A primeira época no SLB foi bastante bem sucedida e apenas faltou a Liga Europa, que nos voltou a escapar. Para Sulejmani esse jogo não correu mal apenas pelo resultado, mas também pela lesão que sofreu após uma entrada dura de Moreno. 

A época seguinte passou na maioria com a recuperação da lesão à clavicula e apenas fez poucos jogos mais pelo Benfica. No fim da época deixou o clube em direção à Suica, onde assinou contrato com os Young Boys Bern.

Esta camisola foi utilizada por ele durante a época de 2013/14 num jogo da Taça da Liga onde marcou o golo da vitória.

Miralem Sulejmani was signed by Benfica in 2013 as one of the most talented wingers in Europe. The idea behind the move was to have more options on the wings. 

He ws born on 5th of December 1988 in Servia and spent most of his formation with Partizan of Belgrade. At the age of only 18 he was signed by SC Heerenveen and scored 15 goals in 34 matches. After 1.5 years he was signed by Ajax as the most expensive domestic move with a reported fee of €16m. He became fundamental in the team of Amsterdam and was important in the conquest of the back-to-back Championships of 2011 and 2012. After a serious injury and the leak of this free move to Benfica at the end of his contract in 2013, he was relegated to the reserve team. 

After he completed the move to Lisbon he had to fight for a starting spot vs colleagues like Salvio, Nico Gaitan or Lazar Markovic. He did well and was regular option for the coach. His first season was quite successful with a national treble. The Final of the Europe League was lost again, and left  bad memories not only because of the result, but also by a injury he suffered that left him off the pitch for more than 5 months. The second season was far from being what he expected and so he left the club in summer of 2015 in direction of Young Boys Bern. 

The shirt was worn by him during the 2013/14 season in League Cup match where he scored the winner.

Portugal 1983

Ontem há 37 anos Portugal apurou-se pela primeira vez para um Campeonato Europeu. Antecedeu-se uma fase de qualificação dura, mas bastante boa. Apenas uma derrota, mas essa pesada, em Moscovo contra a URSS foi o balanço até ao último jogo. Antes do encontro á União Soviética bastava um empate para seguir em frente. 

Era um dia chuvoso em Lisboa. Mesmo assim o Estádio da Luz contou com uma enchente de adeptos para apoiar. Muita gente temia a equipa poderosa e experiente, mas perto do intervalo Chalana foi derrubado à beira da grande área e Portugal foi atribuido um penalty, que Jordão converteu seguramente. No fim, Portugal conseguiu resistir a pressão durante a segunda parte, e conseguiu o apuramento inédito. No ano seguinte, a equipa apenas foi travada no prolongamento das meias-finais. 

Estou convencido que a geração de 1984 foi a semente para os frutos colhidos mais tarde. Os titulos internacionais a nível dos juniores nos anos 90. Os apuramentos regulares a partir de 2000 e o primeiro titulo oficial em 2016. Tudo isso não seria possivel sem esse jogo em 1983.

A Camisola apresentada não foi desse jogo, mas foi o modelo utilizado então. A medalha todos jogadores receberam antes do jogo. 

Yesterday, 37 years ago, Portugal sealed its first qualification for a EC.
Portugal suffered a heavy defeat in the first leg in Moscow vs USSR. The return match was the last match of the qualifier and USSR was first and needed a draw to qualify.

The showdown was held at the fully packed, old Estádio da Luz. It was a rainy day and i remember me sitting in front of an old SW receiver together with my father, uncle and cousin. The quality was bad, but it was sufficient to transmit the ambience in the stadium. Many had the first leg result in mind and expected a similar outcome, but when Chalana was fouled at the edge of the box, we got awarded a penalty that was converted by Rui Jordao.

At the end the underdog Portugal took the better end and traveled to France in 1984, where we only got stopped in extratime of the semis.
I believe the generation of 84 was the seed to what Portugal achieved afterwards. The youth titles since the 90s and regular participations in WC and EC from 2000 onwards... And then the coronation in 2016... It all started in 1983.

The shirt is not out of the match but the same style used by the players. The medal is a small souvenir to all participants and is given to the players beforehand.

Benfica 2019 - Rúben Dias

Rúben dos Santos Gato Alves Dias nasceu no dia 14 de Maio 1997 na Amadora e começou a jogar futebol no Estrela Amadora em 2006. Dois anos mais tarde mudou se para o Benfica, onde continuou a sua formação futebolistica. 

Em 2015 foi promovido para a equipa B mas ao mesmo tempo continuou a jogar nos Juniores que fizeram uma excelente prova na Youth League. Ele foi o capitão da equipa que chegou à final em 2016/17. 

No Verão do mesmo ano estreou-se pela equipa principal. Ao lado do capitão Luisão ele foi ganhando experiência na defesa central e explorando o seu talento. Foi eleito melhor jogador jovem na mesma época e começou atraír interesse por parte de clubes europeus. No ano seguinte ajudou conquistar o 37° Campeonato do Benfica e no verão a Supertaça. 

Nesta época de 2020/21 aínda fez dois jogos, antes de ser contratado pelo Manchester City por uma verba de €68m, o que faz dele o segundo jogador mais caro de Benfica. Despediu-se depois do jogo contra o Moreirense com um golo apontado. 

A camisola apresentada é proveniente do jogo da Supertaca 2019.

Rúben do Santos Gato Alves Dias was born on 14th of may 1997 in Amadora, nearby Lisbon. He started playing at his homeclub Estrela in 2006 and moved to Benfica two years later. In 2015 he represented the second team but continued playing for the Junior team that reached the Final of the Youth league in 2017. Afterwards he was promoted to the first team. With his captain Luisao at his side he gained a lot of experience in the centre-back position, benefiting of a huge amount of talent. He was voted best newcomer in that year and started gaining interest by the usual supects in Europe. The following year was crowned by the 37th Championship and the Supercup, where the shown shirt origins. 

He made two apperances in this season before being signed by Manchester City a few days ago. The €68m fee both clubs agreed for, make him the second largest sale in Benficas history. He left in style with a scored goal and as a captain.

Portugal 1995 - Rui Costa

O dia 11.10.1995 foi um dia muito importante para a Portugal. Duas jornadas antes do fim da Qualificação para o Euro 1996, o apuramento nao estava garantido, mesmo existindo fortes posibilidades carimbar o passaporte para a Inglaterra. Portugal liderava com 19 Pontos, em frente da Austria com 15, Irlanda com 14 e Irlanda do Norte com 11 Pontos. O que importava era não sair derrotado do famoso Ernst-Happel Stadion em Vienna, que ja tinha sido palco de muitos jogos importantes e históricos.
Na partida a Austria começou logo ao ataque com mais de 40.000 a apoiar e com o primeiro golo dos anfitrões aos 21m, complicou a nossa tarefa. Mas pouco depois do intervalo, uma jogada individual de Paulinho Santos deu nos o empate, que a equipa ja não deixou escapar.
Assim, 12 anos depois da ultima participação num Europeu, Portugal voltou apurar-se para o mais importante torneio continental.
Esta camsiola pertenceu a Rui Costa, e foi trocada com um jogador austriaco.
Rui Costa não foi apenas um dos mais acarinhados jogadores do Benfica, mas deixou a sua marca em todos os clubes que representou. Foi um autentico número 10 que guiava a sua equipa e espalhava magia no meio campo. Assim foi chamado "Maestro" pelos apreciadores da sua maneira de jogar.
Iniciou a sua carreira nas camadas jovens do Benfica, onde em 1990 se tornou profissional, mas foi logo emprestado ao AD Fafe por uma época. Voltou, depois de se ter sagrado Campeão Mundial de Sub20 em "sua casa", e tornou-se peça indispensável nas seguintes épocas.
Foi vendido ao Fiorentina em 1994, não porque quiz sair, mas porque o clube teve que vender algumas das suas joias, e tornou-se num jogador a nível mundial nos proximos anos, ao lado de jogadores como Batistuta ou Stefan Schwartz.
Em 2001 o Milan pagou ca. de 40m€ por seu passe e foi aí que finalmente conseguiu ganhar a sua primeira Seria A. Juntou mais uma Taça Italiana ás duas que ja tinha vencido com a Fiorentina, e também ganhou uma Liga dos Campeões em 2003.
Voltou ao Benfica em 2006, para terminar a sua carreira no clube do coração. Mostrou muito do que foi capaz e fez relembrar os bons tempos. O seu ultimo jogo foi a 11 de Maio 2008 e foi despedido como um verdadeiro Maestro.
Com Portugal venceu o Mundia de Sub20 em 1991, foi chamado a equipa principal em 1993 e disputou 94 jogos pelo nosso país. Foi cada vez um pouco mais longe nos Europeus, sendo isso os quartos finais em 1996, meias finais em 2000 e a Final em 2004. Não esqueço o golo que marcou no jogo mais espectacular do Euro em casa, que nos ajudou ir às meias finais. Infelizmente não deu para mais, porque certamente que ele merecia ter ganho esse Europeu, tal como toda a equipa, em 2004.

11th of October 1995 was a very important day for Portugal. Two matchdays befor the ending of the qualification phase for the 1996 Euro, Portugal was not out of the woods despite being on top of the table. Portugal led with 19 points, with Austria in second with 15 points, and Ireland with 14 and Northern Ireland with 11. It was important not to lose to Austria at the famous Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna.
Austria started promising with some good efforts. Pushed by the crowd they scored in the 21st minute. Portugal managed to fight back any other attempt by Austria and so the minimal lead was the halftime result. Quickly after the break Portugal got the better end with an individual effort by Paulinho Santos, who reestablished equality again. In the following time, Portugal played confident and didn`t conceed anymore goal. So this was the first time, after 12 years that Portugal sealed its qualification and was part of the teams, when "Footbal was coming home".

Rui Costa started his carreer at Benfica and went through the youth system of the club. At the age of 18 he was awarded a profissional contract, but was loaned to AD Fafe in his first season. He returned in summer 1991, having won and scored in the Final of the U20 WC at "home", and became fundamental for the team during the following years. He was one of the best central midfielders of his era and a real 10er that orchestered the team and spread magic in many games. That earned him the name "Maestro".
In summer of 1994 he was sigend by Fiorentina, not because he had forced a move, but because had financial trouble and had to sell some of his crown jewels. At the tuscan club he became a top star, where he played with Batistuta and Stefan Schwartz.
In 2001 he moved to AC Milan for a transfer fee of 40m€ and finally managed to win his first Serie A. urthermore he added another Cup and a Champions League to his CV.
In 2006 he moved back to where his heart was. Benfica received him with open arms and he added two more seasons at highest level, unfortunately without anymore of silverware. He quit the pitches on 11th of May 2008.
Apart from the forementioned U20 WC in 1991, he didn`t win any more titles, despite being quite successful. In 1996 Portugal made it to the quarters, in 2000 to the semis and 2004 to the final. I still remember his goal vs England that brought the stadium down.
The shirt was out of the first mentioned match vs Austria and swapped with an austrian player.

Benfica 1996 - Valdo

Valdo Cândido Oliveira Filho, melhor conhecido pelo apelido: Valdo, regressou ao Benfica no início da época 1995/96. Tinha voltado do Paris St Germain, onde tinha jogado quatro épocas depois de ter sido contratado do Benfica em 1991.
Ja com mais de 30 anos não deixou de ser o maestro regente no meio campo, onde "tocava a musica". Na sua primeira época de volta ajudou conquistar a Taça de Portugal. Isso deu accesso à Taça das Taças.
Enquanto as primeiras duas eliminatórias contra o Chrozow e Lokomotiv de Moscovo foram tarefas menos complicadas, os quartos de final não dixaram esperar facilidades. O adversário foi a Fiorentina, e com nomes soantes como Rui Costa e Gabriel Batistuta, entre outros, ia se ao primeiro teste contra uma equipa forte. O jogo da primeira mão em Lisboa acabou com uma derrota por 0:2 e as contas para a segunda mão estavam complicadas. Em Florença aos 22 minutos Edgar marcou o 0:1 e parecia que podia haver milagre. Mas ao fim nao deu para marcar mais um golo e assim terminou a campanha com esse resultado. Valdo foi titular e vestiu a camisola mostrada nesse jogo. Deixou o Benfica no fim da mesma época como um dos melhores jogadores que vestiram o manto sagrado. Nos seus palmares encotnram se dois campeonatos e uma Taça, mais uma Supertaça.

Valdo Cândido Oliveira Filho, better known as: Valdo, returned to Benfica at the start of the 1995/96 season. He returned from Paris St. Germain where he had spent the 4 seasons before, after he left Benfica in 1991.
Already passed the 30 years mark, he didn`t leave a doubt that he (still) would be the playmaker known from former times. In his first season back he helped win the Portuguese Cup, that gave access to the Cup Winners Cup in 96/97.
While the first two rounds vs Chrozow and Lokomotiv Moscow where not that complicated, the quarters proved to be a first hurdle. The opponent, Fiorentina ended 3rd in the season before and had players like Rui Costa and Gabriel Batistuta amongst a strong team. First match at home ended 0:2 and made it a difficult task to complete at Artemio Franchi. But at the 22nd minute Edgar scored and hope began to arise. Unfortunately it was the only goal and so Benfica was out.
The shirt shown was worn by Valdo during this match. He left Benfica at the end of the season for a move to Nagoya Grampus in Japan. Today he is still being counted as one of the best foreign players of all time, wearing the red shirt of Benfica.
