Paulo Pereira nasceu a 27 de Agosto 1965 em Campinas, no Brasil. Começou a jogar para o Esporte Clube São Bento, que competiu no Campeonato Paulista, e onde jogou entre 1985 e 1987. Depois arriscou o salto além fronteiras e foi para o Mexico a jogar pelo Monterrey.
Um ano mais tarde, em 1988, o FC Porto garantiu os seus serviços e assim transferiu-se para Portugal onde representou os azuis e brancos durante cinco épocas, e mais uma emprestada ao Vitória Guimarães.
Paulo Pereira foi central de raíz, mas mais tarde também se adaptou á lateral direita.
Em 1994, a meio da época, assinou contrato com o Benfica, onde voltou a cruzar caminho com o seu antigo treinador Artur Jorge, qual conhecia do seu tempo ao serviço do FC Porto. Permaneceu durante uma éoca e meia, perdendo espaço para Mozer e Helder. Deixou-o clube com a Taça de Portugal, ganha pelo Benfica, e sendo a sua terceira em total.
O Genoa foi o seu proximo destino em 1996 onde voltou a ganhar ritmo e titularidade, ajudando a equipa a ser promovida para a primeira divisão. Seguiu-se mais uma etapa no Reggiana em 1998/99 antes de voltar para o Brasil e pendurar as botas no ano 2000.
Na temporada de 1995/96 foi a primeira vez que apareceram nomes nas costas e foram atribuido números fixos durante toda época. Exceção foram os jogos internacionais (e da pré temporada), onde aínda se jogava com os números de 1-11.

Paulo Pereira was born on 27th of August 1965 in Campinas, Brazil. He started competing on professional level 1n 1985 for Esporte Clube São Bento in the regional Championship Campeonato Paulista. After two seasons he left the club and moved abroad, arriving in Mexico to play for Monterrey.
The following year he crossed the borders again to move to Portugal, where he was signed by FC Porto and where he played for five seasons, plus an additional on loan for Vitoria Guimarães. During that time he used to play as a central defender but later became right-back.
In winter of 1994 he signed contract with rivals Benfica, where he reunited with former coach Artur Jorge. During his 1.5 seasons at Benfica he lost a bit o space to Mozer and Helder, and was mostly used coming from the bench. He left the club in 1996, but with some more silverware, that was the Cup, his third in total.
Genoa was his next destination, where he regained confindence and was often used, helping the club being promoted to Serie A. In 1998 he moved on to Reggiana, and one year later returned to Brazil, where he ended his playing career in 2000.
In that season 1995/96 was the first time when names apeared on the back and each player had his own number throughout the season. Exempion were international matches, where we played without names and with numbers 1-11.

Pedro Manuel Regateiro Venâncio nasceu em Setúbal a 21 de Novembro 1963. Iniciou a sua carreira como futebolista no Vitória em 1975 mas aínda como Junior despertou o interesse do Sporting. Concluiu a sua formação ja no Sporting em 1982 para na época de 82/83 ser lançado na equipa prinicpal. Foi o ano em que Augusto Inácio e Eurico deixaram o Sporting, e assim a defesa bastante delibitada. Um ano perfeito para se afirmar como defesa central, e logo pegou na oportunidade dada e tornou-se titular indiscutível. Durante a sua época de estreia foi forçado a parar e submeter-se a uma cirurgia ao joelho. Problemas congénitos fizeram necessaria essa intervenção, mas com problemas pós-operativos demorou mais que um ano até que conseguiu voltar aos relvados. Voltou e conseguiu competir ao mais alto nível, mas teve que ser operado mais uma vez em 1986 e falhou assim o Mundial para qual tinha sido convocado. O calvário continuou e foram necessárias mais operações, mas mesmo assim nunca fez menos de 20 jogos por época até deixar o Sporting em 1992, com mais de 200 jogos oficiais.
Seguiram-se mais duas épocas no Boavista até ter que pendurar a botas aos 30 anos, mas aínda conseguiu vencer uma Supertaça no Bessa.
Mais tarde voltou para o Sporting para desempenhar várias funções ao longo do tempo no seu clube de coração.
Vestiu as cores de Portugal 21 vezes pelos A, sendo esta camisola uma das últimas que vestiu em 1991.
Pedro Manuel Regateiro Venâncio was born in the city of Setúbal, south of Lisbon, on the 21st of November 1963. He started his career in 1975 at Vitória in his hometown. Still at youthlevels he signed for Sporting in 1981 and one year later he started for the first team already. In that year Sporting had lost two of its most important defenders and so he became the chance to prove his quality... And he did. He became regular starter in his first season but in the middle of it he had to undergo surgery of his knee. Innate problems didn`t allow to play without medical intervention, but complications led to a long absence of more than a year until he could return to the pitch. He managed to come back but already in 1986 he had to undergo another surgery. As if that wasn`t hard enough, this meant that he could not travel to Mexico and play the WC. After his surgery he had to be operated a few more times, and later he said, that he still has nearly no day without pains. However, during his time at Sporting he never played less than 20 matches in a season, adding up to more than 200 apereances.
He left Sporting in 1992 to add two more seasons at Boavista, were he won a Supercup. But in 1994, he had to hang up his boots at the age of just 30.
He represented Portugal 21 times on senior level, this shirt being one of his last he wore in 1991.
O ano chega-se ao fim e apesar do facto de não ter adicionado muitos posts, não quero deixar passar a oportunidade de desejar aos leitores deste blog uma boa passagem de ano e um feliz ano novo. Para terminar este ano, deixo aqui mais uma camisola especial para apreciarem.
António Augusto de Sousa Veloso, chamado Veloso, nasceu a 31 de Janeiro 1957 em São Joao da Madeira. Inscreveu-se no clube da terra natal, o AD Sanjoanense, com 13 anos e completou a sua formação la, tornando se profissional em 1976. Prosseguiu a sua carreira no Beira Mar a partir de 1978, destacando-se pela polivalência no sector defensivo. Sendo defesa direito de preferência, ocupou todos lugares até ao médio defensivo durante a sua carreira. Como benfiquista desde criança, rejetou convites do Porto e Sporting para representar os respectivos clubes, e para aceitar a proposta do Benfica em 1980.
Estreou-se num amigável contra o Panhellenic de Toronto, onde veio do banco marcando o seu primeiro golo (de 13 em total ao longo de 15 épocas) de manto sagrado. Seguiram-se muitos mais jogos, muitos deles a titular, nessa época de estreia.
Ao longo dos anos tornou-se um pilar da defesa do Benfica, atuando principalmente como defesa direito, mas como ja referi antes, também jogou no eixo esquerdo, tal como central, e mesmo médio defensivo. Foi capitão de equipa 322 vezes, o que apenas deixa ultrapassar Luisão e Mario Coluna.
Uma vez ele disse que teve uma boa carreira e que apenas de um penalti falhado é o que mais se fala. Pois, provavelmente foi isso a única coisa que faltou: um titulo europeu. Mas reduzir uma carreira repleta de titulos (16 oficiais), a um jogo só, é algo ingrato porque António Veloso ja nesse momento se tinha tornado numa lenda do clube, e apenas se encontrava a meio da carreira.
Pela Seleção atuou 40 vezes, fazendo parte da comitiva portuguesa em 1984. Falhou o Mundial de 1986 por um teste antidoping errado, mas ao fim nem se sabe se foi melhor assim, devido ao caso Saltillo que pôs uma grande sombra sobre a presença de Portugal no México.
Esta camisola foi utilizada por ele na segunda mão da Supertaça Cândido Oliveira em 1986 contra o FC Porto. Um jogo de má memória para o mundo benfiquista. Tem a particularidade do número especial, que apenas foi aplicado nas camisolas para as duas finais da Supertaça e a eliminatória para a Taça de Portugal contra o Cartaxo (Obrigado Joao pela correção).
This year is coming to the end, and besides not having posted much here during the year, i would like to take the opportunity to wish all the readres and followers a happy and great new year. Last but not least, i leave you with another quite special shirt.
António Augusto de Sousa Veloso, better known as Veloso, was born on 31st Jan. 1957 in Sao Joao da Madeira. At the age of 13 he started his career at the club of his hometown, AD Sanjoanense. He completed his formation and became professional, before moving on to Beira Mar in 1978. His versatility in the defensive sector caught the interest of clubs like Porto and Sporting, but he refused to sign as a "benfiquista" and was lucky enough when he was contacted by Benfica. In 1980 he signed contract with them and had his first match vs Panhellenic Toronto, where he came from the bench and even managed to score his first goal (of only 13 in 15 years). He immediately became first choice and regular starter in his first season.
Along the years he became one of the most influential players, playing every position in the defence. Altough his preferred position was rightback, he was often used as a leftback and even as central defender or defensive midfielder. He led the team 322 times as a captain, with only Luisao and Mario Coluna using the armband more often. His 541 official matches (plus more than 100 non official) earn him the second place in terms of matches played.
Once he said that he had a good career and that a missed penalty is what people talk about. And in fact, a european title is missing in his vita. But reducing a whole career of 16 titles to a single match is some kind of unfair, as he was already a legend of the club and just in the middle of it.
On a national level he represented the county 40 times and was called to the 1984 Euro. He somehow missed the 86 WC due to a positive dopingtest, that later was invalidated by a negative B-test. In the end one may say that it was better not having been part of the team, that was involved in the disruptions, later known as "Saltillo case".
Coming to the shirt: this one was used by him during the second hand of the 1986 Supercup vs Porto. It is special because this kind of numbering was only used for the two matches of this competition in that season.
Com o Mundial de 2022 à porta, quero apresentar mais uma camisola de um dos nossos melhores jogadores e marcadores.
Pedro Miguel Carreiro Resendes, conhecido como Pauleta, nasceu a 28 de Abril 1973 nos Açores. Também foi no arquipélago que iniciou a sua carreira como futebolista, jogando para clubes como Santa Clara ou União Micaelense. A sua qualidade como avançado, com uma técnica bem acima da média, um jogo aereo bastante evolvido e um posicionamento excepcional, chamou à atenção olheiros, o que finalmente resultou na sua contratação pelo CD Estoril Praia em 1995. Logo conseguiu impôr-se e foi melhor marcador da Liga de Honra. Após apenas uma época optou por assinar por um clube estrangeiro, que foi o UD Salamanca. E assim aconteceu o que só mais tarde se mostrou ser uma particularidade apenas dele: foi, até hoje, o unico jogador a representar a Seleção sem uma vez ter atuado na Primeira Liga Portuguesa.
Em Salamanca continuou a sua ascenção e em duas épocas e mais de 70 jogos, teve uma média de golos superior a 0.5 por jogo. Seguiu-se o Deportivo La Coruna em 1998, que nesse tempo era uma equipa bastante forte e se sagrou campeã espanhola em 2000. Nesse mesmo ano mudou-se para a França, representando o Girondins Bordeaux. Logo na primeira época para os gauleses foi melhor marcador da Liga e nas duas épocas seguintes eleito melhor jogador do campeonato francês.
Em 2003 foi transferido para o PSG por uma verba de €12m e logo ajudou a ganhar a Taça em 2004. Seguiram-se mais duas, mas nunca foi campeão em Paris. Em 2006 conseguiu ultrapassar o então melhor marcador do clube, Dominique Rocheteau, fixando a nova marca em 109 golos em 211 jogos. Aínda hoje se encontra na quarta posição da lista.
Pela Seleção alinhou em 88 encontros, marcando 47 golos, até hoje a segunda melhor marca. Ele representou o nosso país nos mundiais de 2002 e 2006 e no europeu de 2004 onde foi vice campeão.
Esta camisola foi utilizada por ele no Mundial de 2002.
The 2022 WC is near and so i would like to take the opportunity to present a shirt out of a former tournament and of a fine and excellent player.
Pedro Miguel Carreiro Resendes, better known as Pauleta, was born on 28 of April 1973 in Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel on the Azores. He started his career on the islands before spotters noticed his talent as a striker. He was known for a good technique, very good airplay and an outstanding positioning. So he moved to CD Estoril Praia in 1995. The club of the second tier in portuguese football was the only one he represented during his time as professional in Portugal. So he became the only player wearing the country colours without ever having played for a first league team in his homecountry.
Just one year later and after being best scorer of the second division he moved to UD Salamanca where he continued his rise. In two years at the club he had a median of above 0.5 goals per match. So he caught the interest of the spanish heavyweights of that time, Deportivo La Coruna, who signed him and where he won his only national championship in 2000. In the same year he moved to France to represent Girondins Bordeaux. In his first year he became best scorer of Ligue 1 and the next two years even best player of the League.
Time to move again and in 2003 he moved to PSG for a repoted fee of €12m. And he shined again. He helped the club winning its first silverware in six years by scoring the only goal of the 2004 Cup Final. He added two more cups and became best scorer of the club, breaking the more than 20 year old record of Dominique Rocheteau, ending with 109 goals in 211 matches.
For Portugal he also became best scorer by leaving behind Eusebio. In 88 matches he scored 47 goals, what is still the second best mark today.
He represented Portugal at the WC 2002 and 2006 and at the Euro 2004 where he won a silver medal.
Abel Luis da Silva Costa Xavier nasceu a 30 de Novembro 1972 em Nampula, Moçambique. Passou os seus primeiros 4 anos no país natal, antes de ir para Portugal, a viver com os seus avós. Viveu a maioria da sua infância com eles, apesar dos pais mais tarde também terem emigrado para Portugal. Tal como muitos rapazes, aprendeu a jogar futebol na rua, mas ja cedo iniciou a sua formação futebolistica no Sporting, onde permaneceu até aos 17 anos. Entretanto ja se tinha destacado de tal maneira que ja tinha feito parte dos escalões juniores das Seleções.
Dispensado pelo Sporting, pouco depois foi para o Estrela da Amadora que se aproveitava de jogadores novos, mas dispensados pelos grandes Clubes, e assim tornou-se, de alguma maneira, competitivo.
Estreou-se em 1989 e ja em 1990 jogou internacional porque o Estrela tinha ganho a Taça no mesmo ano. Seguiram-se três épocas bem sucedidas em quais cresceu e se tornou numa peca importante do clube. A sua posição foi de defesa central, mas também foi utilizado como lateral. Bom no jogo aéreo, também tinha um remate poderoso e apoiava as equipas no ataque.
Em 1993 quase voltava para o Sporting, mas felizmente escolheu o Benfica, onde deu mais um salto. Foi o "verão quente" em que Paulo Sousa e Pacheco deixaram o Benfica para rumarem ao Sporting, e houve mais jogadores a serem abordados pelos Leões. Foi então assim que o Benfica se reforçava com jogadores mais accessíveis e Abel Xavier assinou contrato com o clube da Luz. Depois de um início difícil porque passou a ser lateral direito e o veterano Veloso passou a ser lateral esquerdo, foi muito criticado, mas deu a resposta em campo. Tornou-se jogador importante e conquistou os corações de muitos adeptos, especialmente depois dos jogos contra o Bayer Leverkusen e o mítico 6:3 em Alvalade, que valeu o título.
A época seguinte, com a entrada de Artur Jorge ao comando técnico, não correu da melhor maneira, e tendo sido intransferível em 93/94 com alguns clubes interessados, em 95 a fila de interessados tinha dimínuida e restou o Bari que aceitou um empréstimo. Não correu muito bem, e voltando no fim da época para o Benfica, foi vendido a título definitivo ao Real Oviedo. Ao longo da sua longa carreira, representou 10 clubes estrangeiros em 7 campeonatos diferentes. Pendurou as suas botas em 2008, depois de duas épocas ao serviço do LA Galaxy.
A nível internacional foi extremamente bem succedido. Ganhou o Campeonato da Europa Sub16 em 1989 e em 1991 fez parte da equipa que se sagrou bicampeã mundial Sub20 em Lisboa. A falta de um título a nível sénior coíncidiu com o momento provavelmente mais doloroso, que decorreu em 2000 quando tocou com a mão na bola na grande área durante as meias finais contra a França. Houve muita confusão e injustiça em volta do acontecido, mas o facto foi que o penalti a favor da França ditou a nossa eliminação. A derrota da equipa portuguêsa, que jogou o mais belo futebol a nível internacional. Era nesse ano que mereciamos ter ganho o nosso primeiro Europeu. Mas a culpa certamente não foi de Abel Xavier.
Mais tarde iniciou carreira de treinador, e como se tivesse que ser, 40 anos depois voltou a Moçambique para ser o treinador dos Mambas.
Esta camisola foi utilizada por ele durante o jogo contra o AC Milão em 1995, a contar para os quartos finais da LC. A camisola tem a particularidade que o patch da LC mudou durante a época, sendo este o que se utilizou na 5a jornada contra o Hajduk e depois a partir dos quartos finais.
Abel Luis da Silva Costa Xavier was born on 30th of November 1972 in Nampula/ Mozmbique. He lived his first four years in his homecountry, before moving to Portugal in 1975 to live with his grandparents. He lived with them most of his youth, although his parents had immigrated to Portugal at some point. He started playing footbal on the streets, as many boys in that time did. At the age of 8 he entered the youth academy of Sporting, where he stayed until the age of 17, before being decomissioned. However, at this time he already had been called to the youth teams of the Selecao.
He moved to Estrela da Amadora and became an influential player. He was a central defender with a good airplay and also that what we today call "box to box", with a strong shot. During four seasons he gained the interest of Sporting and Benfica and almost made the way back to Sporting, but in the end he signed for us in 1993, that was called "the hot summer" due to some raids that Sporting made at Benfica by signing Pacheco and Paulo Sousa, and trying to sign more of our players.
So he started in 1993 and had a difficult start because he "stole" the spot of longtime Veteran Veloso as right-back. But all was forgotten with stellar exibitions vs Bayer Leverkusen and the unforgettable win at Alvalade with 6:3, that sealed the title. A season that started bad, turned out to become one of the most convincing.
The following season Artur Jorge returned to Benfica, this time as coach, and things became complicated. While Xavier was innegociable the season before and with some heavyweights wanting him, the qeue shortened and in the end he was loaned to Bari in 1995. After a hard season he returned to Benfica, but just to become tranferred to Real Oviedo in summer 1996. This was were he found his happy place and had two very good seasons. But before listing all his clubs, i`ll only summarize that he represented 10 different clubs in 7 different countries, among them Liverpool, AS Roma, Galatasaray and PSV.
On international level he was well succeeded. In 1989 he won the U16 Euro and two years later he became U20 World Champion. His probably most devastating moment was the semi final vs France at the 2000 Euro, where he touched the ball in the penalty area. A very unfortunate moment, that cost us the final, but certainly not only his fault. Probably the best Portugal team ever, that conquered the hearts of many, had to leave early.
Later he became coach and as if things have to end where they started, he returned to his himecountry 40 years later to become coach of the Mambas.
The shirt is out of a match vs Milan of the 1994/95 Champions league with the particularity that the CL patch changed during the season, and this was used vs Hajduk on the 5th matchday and later from the quarter-finals on.
Paulo Manuel Banha Torres nasceu a 25 de Novembro 1971 em Évora. Depois de começar a jogar futebol no clube da sua terra natal, foi recrutado pelo Sporting em 1985, onde inicialmente representou as camadas jovens. Teve a sua estreia na equipa prinicpal em 1988, que foi o seu primeiro e único jogo da época. Na época seguinte tornou-se uma forte opção como lateral-esquerdo, mas aínda não conseguiu tornar-se titular. Foi emprestado por algum tempo ao Atlético na época seguinte e depois de voltar, aínda teve dificuldade de se afirmar. So com Bobby Robson ao comando em 1992/93 é que se conseguiu afirmar definitivamente e tornar titular na época seguinte.
Depois, com mudanças na equipa técnica e nova concorrência pelo lugar, foi menos utilizado e acabou de deixar o clube em 1995.
Paulo Torres teve o seu lugar na defesa esquerda, mas com capacidade de percorrer todo lado esquerdo. Destacou-se pelo seu remate forte e pela grande qualidade na marcação de livres.
Por Portugal provavelmente teve os seus maiores momentos e foi muito bem succedido ao longo dos anos. Vice-campeão da Europa Sub16 e Sub18 e o seu maior successo em 1991, sagrando-se Campeão do Mundo de Sub20 em Portugal. A camisola apresentada, oriunda desse torneio, foi utilizada num dos jogos dessa festa inesquecível e um dos maiores feitos na história do Futebol português.
Paulo Manuel Banha Torres was born on 25th of November 1971 in Évora. After starting to play at his homeclub, he was signed by Sporting in 1985 to get his formation at the club. In 1988 he had his first match for the senior team, that was also the only one in that season. The following season he was used more frequently, but couldn`t break through so that he was loaned to Atletico in the follwing season. Just after Bobby Robson taking over at the helm of the club he was a serious option as a left back. In 93/94 he was a regular starter but in the follwong season lost his spot to others. So he left in 1995 to represent Campomaiorense and then Salamanca, Rayo Vallecano, CD Chaves and Leganes before later in his career representig clubs of lower leagues and hanging his boots in 2003. Later he started a coaching career.
He played as a left back but was pretty versatile on the whole left side. He had a powerful long range shot and was a feared scorer of freekicks.
On international level he probably had his biggest successes. He became Vice-European Champion on U16 and U18 level, before he clinched the WC on U20 level in 1991. It still is one of the most important achievements in portuguese football and he was one of the most influential players, scoring three goals.
Edgar Patricio de Carvalho Pacheco nasceu a 7 de Agosto 1977 no Kwanza sul na Angola. Chegou a Portugal como criança e entrou no Benfica através de Gil Gomes para ter a sua formação futebolistica. Teve a sua estreia no jogo da Supertaça 1995 em Paris. A época seguinte, de 95/96, foi a sua primeira época que jogou por completo. Foi um jogador que, apesar da sua juventude, possuia um físico bastante desenvolvido e destacava-se pela velocidade na ala direita e no ataque.
Permaneceu no Benfica mais duas épocas, mas com os problemas financeiros aumentando e um presidente que quase ia levando o clube á bancarrota, também Edgar não escapou ás trafulhices. A sua mudança para o Real Madrid em 1998 envolveu muitas promessas que se tornaram mentiras por parte de Vale e Azevedo, mas finalmente Edgar seguiu caminho para a capital espanhola. Infelizmente não conseguiu impor-se e foi para o Malaga no inverno de 98/99, primeiro emprestado, depois a titulo definitivo. E foi em Malaga que voltou a ser feliz. Não só pelo clima, que o lembrava de Angola, mas também se tornou numa peça fundamental pelo successo do clube, ao que ajudou a subir de divisão e onde jogou até 2007 em 218 partidas.
Quando voltou para Portugal em 2007 para o Boavista, foi pouco utilizado, numa época que ditou a despromoção. Jogou mais um ano no Chipre e pendurou as botas com 31 anos de idade.
A nível de Seleção, ele percorreu todos escalões jovens, tendo disputado mais de 70 jogos, mas apenas vestiu uma vez a camisola da Seleção A, em 1998 contra Moçambique.
A camisola foi utilizada por ele na época de 1997/98.
Edgar Patricio de Carvalho Pacheco was born in Angola on 7th of August 1977. Due to the civil war in Angola he left the country and came to Portugal, where he started his formation at Benfica in 1990. He was a player that had his strong points in his physis and velocity and was a right winger.
His debut came in the Supercup match vs Porto in 1995. Then he was a regularly used player in the follwong season with more that 30 appereances.
He played for Benfica two more seasons, but with financial problems looming and a president that almost brought the club to bancruptcy, Edgar became victim of lies and breaches of promises. However, in 1998 he signed contract with Real Madrid but didn`t convince and was loaned to Malaga in the winter transfer period. It was where he found his quality and abaility again, and was signed in summer of 1999. He helped the club getting promoted to first division and spent 8 years in Andalucia, playing more than 200 matches.
He returned to Portugal in 2007 to represent Boavista, but wasn`t used very often. After relegation he moved abroad again, to play one more season in Cyprus.
For Portugal he earned more than 70 caps on youth levels but only made one apperenace for the Selecao in 1998.
