Portugal 1984 - Carlos Xavier
Portugal had new kits ahead of the Euro 84. They had diagonal pinstripes on both kits. While the home kits changed a little after the tournament, the away shirts remained the same during 1985. This shirt was used during a U21 match vs. Czechoslovakia by international Carlos Xavier.
Carlos Jorge Marques Caldas Xavier was born on Jan 26th, 1962 and has a twin brother, Pedro, who was a successfull football player, aswell.
He started his carreer a Sporting Lisbon already in youth levels and soon was praised for his outstanding technical capacities. So it was no surprise that he was called to represent the seniors at the age of 18 in 1980/81. While he had only a few matches played in his first season, he became first choice in his second where he was a central defender. During that season Sporting won the double in Portugal.
During the following years he remained first choice, except during the 86/87 season, where he was loaned to Académica. In 1991 he left the club to represent Real Sociedad, alongside his teammate Oceano and played 3 seasons abroad. Afterwards he returned to Sporting for two more seasons, adding one more Cup and a third Supercup before he retired. He played 343 matches, scoring 23 goals.
He was capped 10 times for Portugals seniors and represented the country 16 times while U21.
